A 'must-read' for information warfare policy wonks

"Strategic Warfare in Cyberspace" (SWIC) takes discussions of information security policy to a new level. Lt Col Rattray is uniquely qualified to write this book, serving as commander of the 23rd Information Operations Squadron in the Air Force Information Warfare Center. While I was a captain in the Air Force Computer Emergency Response Team, he asked me if we were ready to defend against strategic information warfare attacks. His research into this issue forms the core of his excellent book.

SWIC is not written for technical staff. Rattray is a fellow Air Force Academy and Harvard University graduate, and I recognize his writing style and methodology as an effort to develop analytical frameworks. He takes an innovative approach, comparing American strategic information warfare efforts of the 1990's to development of the Army Air Corps' capability to wage strategic precision bombing. Rattray offers four enabling conditions for successful strategic warfare and five facilitating factors for establishing organization technological capabilities. He critiques strategic air war and strategic information war using these elements, drawing policy conclusions and making recommendations for future actions.

SWIC is highly original, very thorough, and well-documented. Rattray and I are both history/political science majors, so I found his discussion of Air Corps history enlightening. Readers more interested in conclusions may be tempted to skip this material. SWIC falls short in its descriptions of technical means to wage digital warfare. Someone with hands-on knowledge of specific attack and defense tools and techniques should have helped Rattray refine his understanding of the technical aspects of computer security. Nine years have passed since Farmer and Venema wrote the 'SATAN' assessment tool, yet contemporary writers still believe it exemplifies current threats. What about Nmap, which is five years old but actively maintained and used daily?

Overall, SWIC seems right on the money in its analysis and conclusions. Rattray correctly identifies that American information warfare defenses are far too crime-oriented, probably due to the FBI's role. He stresses the need to improve people and processes, not just products. He faults the government for omitting technology vendors from the protection of critical infrastructure, and criticizes federal policy mistakes regarding encryption. Government, military, and industry policymakers should read and heed Rattray's book before an adversary tests the United States' capability to wage strategic information warfare.

A must have book !

I've purchased many xing yi books but they are all the same. They show five element fist and 12 animals and maybe some basic application. But like most books show "nothing" of the power training required to make the system to work. As the book says, without the proper internal training when you're old you will have nothing. Another great thing is how each exercise is explained in great detail along with photos of the great master performing them. The explanation of San Ti which is of great importance in xing yi was explained in detail as well. Overall this is the best book I've purchased on any internal martial art. Thanks to Tim Cartmell and Dan Miller for sharing this info which is many times kept secret from all but the most trusted students.

Very good

This is an excellent book about Nei Gung. It presents lots of exercises and it does so in a tidy, coherent manner. The internal work in presented clearly together with the physical movements. I practiced many of the exercises and the do work. It is well written and the pictures are far better than the average (which doesn't mean that they'll win any price in photography contests, though). It is a book I recommend without exhitation.

Filling the gap on bass books

This book from the Collective fills a major hole in the selection of bass books. Most people who buy these books are somewhat self-taught/self-paced. Once you get beyond the intro to bass books, its hard to transition from there. This has been especially true if you are into fusion music. I say this because this is the case for myself.

In this book, the subject of contemporary fusion is covered progressively. Simply read the first chart and listen to it. Then read and listen to the last 2 and you will see this is designed to truly teach you something! What a concept. The progressive nature of this book is very satisfying if you wanted help taking your skills in reading, listening and writing music to the next level (certainly true as a self-teaching bass player). The book covers individual progressive/fusion concepts in rhythm, harmony and so forth, then shows you the concepts through the context of 4 very different charts. You also get the double take treatment, meaning you get the demo track with full band followed by the "minus bass" track. Though, I recommend playing along with the demo early on if this is not the type of music you often get to play/practice. This is straight standard notation. No TABS, which is a good thing if you want to play music with more advanced musicians.

If your ears are very knowledgeable on fusion music, you may be a bit disappointed in the overall selection of charts covered. This book certainly could use 2 more volumes. You will not get too much of an opportunity to cover traditional walking lines in a modern fusion context which you often hear with payers like Anthony Jackson or John Pattitucci. There is not much for neo-soul crossover here either. This mostly contains light funk influences and some afro-cuban styles in a modern jazz/rock context. So, if you really like names like Robert Glasper, "Thundercat" Stephen Bruner, Hiromi Uehara or Simon Philips and so on, you may be left wanting a bit more.

All the same, this is a great start and hopefully we can see more of this in the future from Carl Fischer and the Collective guys in NYC.

Deliciously sexy!

Lauren Hawkeye has written another amazing book!! She has the ability to grab hold of you from the cover and keep you on edge until the very end. This book has every possible thing a reader wants in a book... angst, deception, anger, fear, corruption, deceit, lies, suspense, revenge, second chances, moving on, and eventually... love. Ms. Hawkeye has given us a fast-paced, very enjoyable story with an interesting story-line and great characters. One Night With The Billionaire is unique, has some BDSM elements, and some hot sex.

I received a copy of this book for an honest review. I enjoyed Mari's journey through this book and the relationship that developed between her and Alexi. The added danger from his family and how she was very logical with how she thought just added to the story. Mari's choice of words to tell Alexi she wouldn't have sex with him was but one of the humorous moments. The background storyline with John and Sylvia I enjoyed and would like to read more about how their relationship develops.

What a nice surprise!

There are a million or should I say a billion billionaire books out now. This one is different. I loved the Greek mafia angle, it added a little something unique to the story. Mari is an innocent genius. Loved her awkwardness. The history of her upbringing reveals a lot and it's no wonder she is... different. Alexi has a terrible past and it's not surprising that he left that life behind. Overall a really good story!

About the Author
Thomas R. Yechout is a Professor of Aeronautical Engineering at the U.S. Air Force Academy. He earned his Doctor of Engineering degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Kansas and is an AIAA Associate Fellow. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the NASA Outstanding Achievement Award, Frank J. Seiler Award for Research Excellence, and the Heiser Award as the Outstanding USAFA Senior Faculty Educator. He was also honored by the Carnegie Foundation as the 2011 Colorado Professor of the Year. His background includes development and flight testing of the F/FB-111, A-7D, F-4E, and Lear 35 aircraft as well as extensive experience with the A-10. In addition, he has served as the principal investigator for numerous wind tunnel investigation programs, holds the patent for the Rakelet wing tip modification concept, and has authored over 200 technical publications.

Great text!!
Very clear, easy to read and follow.
Author does seem to expect the reader to read in a continuous fashion (from beginning to end) other wise the reader can become lost. But that is expected from these kinds of engineering books.
Over all; 5 stars is a fitting rating for this text.

About the Author
Mark Hammer Sr., Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering, is a writer of Environmental Engineering publications in the United States and Saudi Arabia. During his long tenure as a professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Dr. Hammer also served as the Director of the Environmental Protection Agency Grant in Water Quality Control. Professor Hammer has taught at the King Fahd and King Abdulaziz Universities in Saudi Arabia where he conducted environmental engineering research in addition to his teaching responsibilities   Mark J. Hammer Sr. is an independent consultant in Lincoln, Nebraska, and Mark J. Hammer Jr., is with HDR Engineering, Inc.

somewhat helpful, but sloppy and confusing

TONS of typos - from grammatical to vital data and labels in example problems. Following such problems is extremely frustrating at times.
Lots of things are not explained before they are referred to, causing you to go to the index and find the explanation and flip back and forth. Some things are referenced and never explained at all - including data used in solutions to example problems.
