Out Of Left Field

Maybe I missed something in the first three books, but since when is Joshua gay? Shock value for the sake of shock value is unnecessary. After being a fan of this well-written fantasy series, I thought I knew the main character. I guess I was wrong. Talk about going off-script.

A fun, quick read packed with adventure

I read this after reading the first two books in the series (so before book 3). The leading man, Joshua, wants a vacation (and after his last adventures, I thought he deserved one), but heroes aren't so lucky.
As in the other books, this story maintains a great air of humor despite the action, vampires and danger involved. Joshua has developed nicely, more independent, sure and mature than before. I enjoyed seeing him out on his own and getting a better sense of what he's like when he's not fighting to save his mom (or trying not to fight with his father.) He's evolving into a hero to die for.
The scenes are well set, and I had no trouble setting myself in the art gallery, alley, warehouse or where ever else Joshua's adventures lead. And his opponents are as fun as always--great to watch Joshua outwit them.
This is a short read and a fun one, perfect for a quick grab on a rainy night. And this works as a stand-alone as well, if one wants to get a touch of Joshua before diving into the rest of the series (which I appreciated).
In other words, if you love urban fantasy with a lot of humor during the kick-butt battles and saving the world, then I'd recommend taking a peek at this one.

Snarky, fast-paced, and fun paranormal read

This is a shorter addition to the Mage Tales world, great for a Saturday afternoon read. Just as fast-paced as the first two books but this time, Joshua teams up with new characters to survive this new--and of course unexpected--adventure. Good thing he's got magic to help out! If you haven't read the other books in the series, this would be a great intro to Joshua and the Mage Tales universe.
