Fast-paced psychological thriller

I made the mistake of starting After Anna at midnight and pulled an all-nighter. What a page-turner this story is! Julia, a soon to be divorced mother, arrives at five-year-old Anna's school for pickup. Stuck in a meeting, she is a half hour late and prepares herself for a dressing down by a teacher. What she is not expecting is news that Anna has gone missing. A frantic search yields no results.
Who is to blame? Julia, who not only stayed late, but also allowed her cell phone to die? The school, which had a policy of leaving none of its charges alone? All the blame is laid at the foot of the mother, especially by her estranged husband and his mother.
As time passes, the media become hyper and print stories about Julia that have little to no basis in fact. She quickly trends on Twitter as the most reviled woman in Britain. She is the new Myra Hindley, the UK's notorious child killer in the 1960s. I had little sympathy for Julia until the media blitz began. Her milquetoast husband and his battle-axe of a mother revel in the negative stories about Julia, which makes them beyond redemption in my mind.
Hope for a good outcome dwindles after seven days, when Anna wanders unharmed into a shop. She remembers nothing. Game on! Why would someone kidnap a child, hold her hostage for a week and release her unharmed?
Thus begins a series of twists and turns that last until the final page. I was sure about the identity of the kidnapper. Alex Lake could have increased the suspense by reducing what the kidnapper said when thinking out loud, but the perpetrator never revealed the method and the motive.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and wish that professional critics would stop comparing every book in this genre to Gone Girl and Girl on a Train. Each book stands alone!

Suspensful book that kept it's secrets well hidden leading up to a tension filled ending.

A psychological thriller with a twist here, a twist there and a bit of reveal everywhere. After Anna is for fans of a well written psychological thriller that keeps the tension and suspense levels up. I liked the fact that this novel had me trying to outguess the plot and characters from the very start and kept me on my toes until the very satisfying end.

A mothers horror, her girl is missing and the local community and press don't take too kindly to her, quickly making her the bad mother in this awful predicament. We are introduced to the family. The dysfunction within the family especially between her husband and her mother- in-law is fascinating. I had the cogs of my brain in gear!
After Anna is returned home unharmed and the police and the family are baffled as to the entire reason for her abduction in the first place. Why would a child be abducted then returned home unharmed? Statistically it rarely happens, and Anna can't recall a thing...for a while.
As reveals start to creep in, the suspense levels go up and I found myself trying to be the armchair detective, the book successfully kept it's secrets from me. More and more the book builds up and by big reveals it's really edge of your seat stuff. The plot is quite unique, certainly unexpected with some very well written complex characters.
Who took Anna, returned her home and most importantly WHY? You must read this one to discover for yourself, highly recommended with 4 paw prints from Booklover Catlady.

A disturbing but very good book.

Without going into too many details, which would spoil the story, this book details what can happen when a person is a true psychopath, and will do anything to get their way, when in their diseased mind, they are absolutely doing the right thing. I recommend this to lovers of psychological thrillers.
