No Orchids for Miss Blandish, Chase

This 1939 novel by James Hadley Chase tells a story about gangs in the Kansas City area circa 1934. Two members of a small gang stop at a rural gas station / lunchroom. A reporter stops by, and chats with a gang member. This reporter is covering the "Blandish shindig", where Miss Blandish will be wearing a very valuable diamond necklace. Then she and her boyfriend will visit a roadhouse. Bailey, and his boss Riley, plan a highway robbery to steal this hard-to-fence diamond necklace.

They stop the car to steal the necklace. Miss Blandish's boyfriend tries to defend her, and is shot and killed. The gang decides to kidnap the heiress, and drive away. But when they stop for gas, the members of another gang, bigger and more dangerous, see them and later figure out they kidnapped the heiress. The Grisson gang will follow the Riley gang and hijack the heiress. The Riley gang will not be able to complain. [Would a gang that just murdered a man give up so easily?] Now the Grisson demands a million dollars in used bills, and gets it. But they renege, and keep Miss Blandish for her utility.

This story, interesting in itself, has little redeeming value. While fictional, it echoes the crimes of the 1930s: the kidnaps in the Midwest (and elsewhere), the gang wars, the society of that day. There is little mention of politic, or the corruption of local government. The idea of wearing an expensive necklace to a roadhouse seems unbelievable, except as a hook for this story. But it serves as a warning against foolish actions, and the destructive use of drugs. A small company is put out of business by a larger company, and then falls before a more powerful organization. [The word "blandish" means "pleasing, alluring, enticing".] Some have compared this to the kidnapping of Patty Hearst.

Great depiction of the old time baddies, who were pretty bad! Exciting but a pretty "hard" read, not for the sensitive! A very good cameo of the 30s and 40s underworld.

Good but not perfect. Dated. Unique.

This is a two volume series, reasonably sized. It attempts to capture all of Petroleum Engineering in one shot. For students, professors, and workers. It's been out of print for some time, and look at the price! Clearly, people are clinging to their copies, so it must be doing something right.

According to the preface, the major objective of the book is to provide a comprehensive practical reference manual. He saw the need when flipping through his many books while sitting for the Professional Engineering Exam. Nobody had yet published a single "textbook" style reference. This was his attempt.

I am quite torn reviewing this book. Mian does so many things right. He covers nearly every subject. There are 250 solved example problems for hands-on application. Tons of charts. The book is entirely self-contained. With so many great points, why not 5 stars?

First, the printing style is terrible. Grainy and sprawled. This is a shame, because Mian clearly took pains to do this book right. Yet the reader is constantly flipping through pages due to the poor editing/printing. With better publishing, this book would be a gem. I have both volumes, know them well, and yet dread opening due to the print style alone.

Second, it's dated. Lots of number tables are included from the pre-computer era. And while it seems to have been written (at least partly) for he PE exam, I never once opened this book while taking the exam (of course the exam has changed a lot since this book was published). Also, the exam seems to be based upon SPE references, and this book is not. So while Mian provides lots of details in his book that I have found useful over the years, his approach is rarely used elsewhere. Sort of sad, but that's just the way it is.

I own this book (both volumes) and wouldn't give it away. If it was updated and went back into print, I would certainly buy it again. But if I was an engineer new to this book, I wouldn't take the plunge unless it was updated first.

Essential Captain Marvel Vol. 2: From Kree Warrior to Cosmic Awareness

Captain Marvel hits his stride with brilliant storytelling by Jim Starlin in this recent edition to the "Essential Marvel" line. This collection includes the introduction of Thanos and Drax the Destroyer; their confrontation with Captain Marvel and the Avengers is an integral part of Marvel Comics history. Along the way, Kree warrior Mar-Vell gains cosmic awareness, transcending not only his alien origins but his status as a second-rate Marvel character. The other stories in this compilation are good, but Jim Starlin's epic tale of Thanos' plot to gain the Cosmic Cube and become God is what makes this collection special. The black and white reprinting on cheap paper is a negative, but these inexpensive volumes are an excellent way to check out the early history of the Marvel Universe.

The first part of this collection of the old stories, the middle part is Written and drawn by Jim Stalin and starts the Thanos Saga. this still inflenuces the Marvel Universe. The last part is mostly written By Steve Englehart, Just as good.

This Captain's essentially Mar-Vellous!

It looks like Mar-Vell, warrior of the Kree Empire, has gone through the emotions ever since he was assigned to infiltrate Earth. The love for the medic Una. The jealousy-filled betrayal by Colonel Yon-Rogg. The suspicion of his cover identity from the humans he interacts with. Confrontations with super heroes and villains. The manipulations of the Kree Supreme Intelligence. And the union with Rick Jones through the "Nega-Bands". Thus, Captain Mar-Vell was reborn, renounced his Kree heritage and fully accepted his role as a hero. However, in CAPTAIN MARVEL VOL. 2, things get more complicated for Mar-Vell, Rick and even the universe, which will have future repercussions in both a cosmic ... and personal scale.

This volume collects tales from CAPTAIN MARVEL (Vol. 1) # 22-46, IRON MAN (Vol. 1) # 55 and MARVEL FEATURE (Vol. 1) # 12. As Mar-Vell and Rick fight offbeat foes and sometimes each other dealing with the inter-dimensional body-switches (one stays on Earth while the other's in the Negative Zone), sinister events from space are about to land. The mastermind behind it all: the power-mad god named Thanos! His sole obsession: destroying the entire universe for his true love --- Death! His forces include the Controller, the Super-Skrull, the Blood Brothers and the all-powerful Cosmic Cube. It's up to Mar-Vell's "cosmic awareness", the Thing, Iron Man and his fellow Avengers, Drax the Destroyer and Moondragon, with help from Mentor and Eros (renamed Starfox) of Titan, to halt the holocaust. Afterwards, the battles arch-foes the Living Laser, Nitro and the Lunatic Legion, not to mention the trial of Uatu the Watcher. Mar-Vell and Rick finally, and literally, separate to deal with their own personal matters, but later reunite for a journey in space. Their destination is the Kree home planet of Hala, where awaits Ronan the accuser and the Supreme Intelligence with revenge on their minds.

Jim Stalin, Steve Englehart, Chris Claremont and others did a marvelous job in taking this Stan Lee/Gene Colan creation to new heights as vast as outer space itself. There were many heroes who has taken the mantle of Captain Marvel over the years (like Carol Danvers, currently), but it is Mar-Vell who shall forever be the first and greatest of them all.

Cohen (English and Medieval and Early Modern Studies Institute, George Washington Univ.) explores the unrelenting vitality of the inert, i.e., stone, and challenges the human desire to view it as external to and separate from humans. He postulates that stones are never completely inert; they have interior and exterior lives, like humans, which is an assertion that challenges the human tendency to view stone as "other" and "natural," two categories of existence that engender exploitation, commodification, and consumption. Cohen hypothesizes that rocks, stones, minerals, and gems possess inner lives and agency, as revealed by their use in medieval texts, that are useful in solving human problems and understanding human interconnectedness with nature. Punctuated by and organized with clichés, metaphors, and concepts used commonly to reference stones in human experience, the text consists of an explanatory, reflective introduction; seven chapters that explore sociocultural, political, literary, geological, and personal history in an effort to uncover the puissance of stone and consider human experience in non-human terms; and immensely useful notes, bibliography, and index. About the Author
As a full-time journalist for the outdoors press, Wayne Van Zwoll has published five books and several hundred articles, primarily on firearms, optics, and big game hunting, over the past 20 years. He edits the specifications section of Shooter's Bible, and his work has appeared in more than two dozen magazines, including Sports Afield, Outdoor Life, and Field & Stream. As a competitive shooter, Wayne has won two state small-bore titles, and in 1996 was named "Shooting Sports Writer of the Year" by the Outdoor Writers Association of America. He also runs a Wyoming outdoor skills camp for women, and gives seminars at sports shows and teaches marksmanship. Wayne currently resides in central Washington State with his wife Alice.

Excellent photograph-reference guide to bolt-action rifles

I collect World War II Bolt Action rifles and this book is everything the other reviewers have said it was. It is especially helpful in giving the reader cut-away views of the internal workings of many famous worldwide, bolt-action rifles, from the earliest Mausers to today's favorite hunting rifles. Excellent technical info and professional viewpoints by the authors, who are total gun enthusiasts and historians. The photos are all in black and white, but that doesn't matter as it is still a wonderful reference book. As usual, a great price on Amazon as well!

Great Book!

I have taken my guns apart and looked at the design, but now I am learning more about my guns with this book.

De Haas can take guns apart, see more, and write more than I can for myself.

If you have a zillion bolt action rifles, get this book and read about what you have got.

De Haas lists advantages and disadvantages of each rifle design. This is not light reading from some stupid gun writer, this is like engineering, and may be too much for some readers.

700 pages, and he shows drawings of the threads and shanks of the barrels, for those into re barreling.

We concentrate here on painters such as Rogier van der Weyden (1400-1464), Jan van Eyck (c. 1390-1441, commonly described as the founder of modern oil painting), Gerard David (c. 1460-1523), Hugo van der Goes (1440-1482), Hans Memling (1433-1494), Joos van Cleve (c. 1485-1540), Jan Gossaert, also called Mabuse (c. 1475/8-1532), Geertgen tot Sint Jans (fl. late 15th 1485/ 95), Quentin Massys (c. 1465-1530), Joachim Patinir (c. 1485-1524), Dieric Bouts (c. 1415-1475), Petrus Christus (fl. 1442-1473) and Bernard van Orley (c. 1488-1541). One of the most celebrated aspects of Early Netherlandish or Flemish painting is its heartfelt, intense religious emotion. It is this aspect that interests us in this book. The new aesthetic vision of Early Netherlandish art was later applied to still life paintings, satires, landscapes, and portraits, but it is the religious works with which we are concentrating on here. Michelangelo's famous statement about Early Netherlandish art pinpoints the depth of devout feeling found in so much of Northern European art: Flemish painting will, generally speaking, please the devout better than any painting in Italy, which will never cause him to shed a tear, whereas that of Flanders will cause him to shed many... The new vision of Northern European painting which flourished in the 15th century was a combination of a new aesthetic approach to reality, and an intensifying of religious fervour. The new vision aimed at sculptural accuracy, a naturalistic use of lighting, and three-dimensionality. Mixed with the new use of oil paint, the new vision gave the art of Philip the Good's reign a special flavour and style well suited to the circumscription of devout religious truths. The new painting inherited its jewel-like brilliancy partly because many painters were trained as goldsmiths. This skilled handling of metalwork and miniature illustration shows in Early Netherlandish art. All Early Netherlandish paintings were made on wood panels, and painted from light to dark in thin glazes. It is partly this subtle glazing which gives Early Netherlandish painting its glorious luminescence. The Early Netherlandish artists exploited the effects of different hues and thicknesses of glazes of oil paint, controlling how the glazes reflected light. primarily history book, not an art book

Woodcuts have been around for over a millennium in China. But Tang looks at a much more recent instantiation. He identifies a modern movement that originated in the 1930s, as a reaction to the turbulent events in China, mainly a weak and corrupt feudalistic government and a brutal Japanese invasion.

He describes key artists, many perhaps little known outside China. The subjects of the woodcuts often have political meaning. Sometimes Communist inspired. The book is not a simple pictorial guide to woodcut images. Though of course it has several nice plates of these. More broadly, it chronicles the history and struggles of the time. It was halfway into the book before I realised that this is not a typical art book. But rather one about history. And that woodcuts are the lens through which Tang describes 1930s China.

Great book for Parents of children who have CAS

I read this book in one sitting. It was really great to have both perspectives of the child and parent. Some of the book was repetitive, but I really took to heart the message that this mother did all that she could for her children, in fears if she was doing the right thing. Looks like she did everything she could to make her children be successful. I really wish the son/brother had more input to it than one chapter, as he sounds exactly like my son and I would have loved to have heard more from his perspective.

I found out my child has Childhood Apraxia of Speech a few months ago. I've been searching the internet for information and came across this book. I'm so glad we bought it! What a really cool perspective both from a mother with TWO children that have apraxia, and from a girl in college that has apraxia. I can't even begin to tell you how helpful it has been and how much hope it has given me. I've been going through all the stages of grief and this book brought me hope, gave me knowledge, made me cry... it's written in a way that makes me feel like I'm reading the journal of a friend. It's not a technical book (although I did learn a lot about everything!) but it's more about the experience as a whole - from a parents perspective. I'm very impressed. I'm so grateful that this book was written. Thank you!

This book gives me so much hope. I read it in 6 hours and cried a bunch... But came away with hope that one day my soon to be 4 year olds will be able to talk. And that apparently he has pure speech apraxia because that is his only problem. Hope is a wonderful thing to gain!
