Small but enjoyable dialogues.

This literal and physically small book is a great and approachable introduction to the philosopher. I'm glad it wasn't titled 'Coffees with' because certainly one can finish it over a taller cup. The book is written in a series of dialogues with the philosopher as if someone with modern day queries was able to have the man alive and accounting for his writings. Considering the nature of Plato's writings this dialgue nature of discovery seems quite appropriate. Fun, brisk and not without a sense of humor, you could do worse for an introduction to the greater, expansive lexicon...just don't expect this to keep you company long.

A brief glimpse of Plato's shadow, not Plato

Don Moor is a clever, well-versed philosopher, but the constraints of this series fail to show him, or Plato, at their best. The book is an amusing diversion, however, I found that it did not provide a meaningful introduction to Plato nor a realistic recreation of the historic period.

Hard to follow

This book has hundreds of grammar and spelling errors and often doesn't make much sense. In many parts of the book, the author gives examples of successful texts with women but I didn't attribute it to any text game he was outlining. There are a few good ideas here and there but it's hard to separate what's worth remembering and what's not. Overall, this was a waste of time and money.

the material is good, however...

I have read two books by this author, that being said, he got the books to the market, however, it seems no one bothered to check grammar, spelling, punctuation or for missing and wrongly used words, at some points I was sure I would need Navy code breakers to make sense of it, it was like this with BOTH books, how does this happen? if you are gonna put something out there for the public AND put your name on it...don't you think it should be your best work? not just something you threw together haphazardly? if you can get past all the horrible grammar errors, he does pass along some useful information, but it is very sad for an author to put a product that poorly written out there

Way too short and absurdly priced...

...it's only fifty-sixty pages...effective ear training requires persistent daily practice...that means you need a LOT of exercises in a variety of formats and styles...this book doesn't come close...I'd recommend a book like Mark Harrison's "Contemporary Eartraining" to provide a skeleton for building basic skills...then use a computer program like "Earmaster" to generate LOTS of exercises to build a body onto the skeleton...as you advance, add on something like Marta Ghezzo's book to put your acquired skills in a more musical context...finally, there are a bunch of free midi files available on the web...these can be used in programs like midillustrator to dissect and analyze scores from the ear's point of view...

Great for Beginners!

I have yet to finish this book, but I love it!
It is a very incremental method - you start with do, re, and mi. Each chapter introduces one new solfege syllable and new rhythms. I also love that it features a full answer key. This feature make this an ideal book for self-study (which I do a lot). I have a lot of confidence that, by the time I finish this book, I will have the foundation necessary for delving into ear training at it's best!

Her work also includes treatises on history, law, mysticism, theology, and politics, and was heavily influenced by the Arabic poetic tradition.
This volume contains annotated translations of works by the 19th century intellectual giant, Nana Asma'u, including 54 poems and prose texts. Asma'u rallied public opinion behind a movement devoted to the revival of Islam in West Africa, and organized a public education system for women.

More than just buying a house

I was sent this book for Christmas since I had stayed in Tuscany and am interested in buying there. Wow! This book is like a Whole Earth Catalog for Italy. Beyond the details on how to buy a house, it's got material on living there in a way that puts you right in the middle. I loved how the author interspersed Italian words and phrases throughout the book and had various glossaries for buying a house and even gardening and dealing with builders doing renovations. I find that I can recall the words easily because of the way he put them in the context of how I would actually use them in conversation to get something I want. The wit and wisdom sidebar on Berlusconi is a real gem. His listing of things like Italian TV and radio, I mean, I can see myself living there, important in the actual determination to buy. Also, he's got Web Site addresses throughout for additional information like real estate agents by region. This is a terrific book that's fun to read and dip into. I recommend it, highly.

We bought a house in Cortona Italy 12 years ago only after a long hard search. IF ONLY we had Gordon Neale's book with us on that first trip hunting for the perfect house. His detailed knowledge of the intracacies of house buying law in Italy is infinite and we would have had fewer grey hairs if this book was available then
. Apart from that it is a wonderful guide from a very sympathetic student of the history, language and humanity of the Italian nation. In concise chapters he will give you the benefit of his long study and experience of the regions, their differences and special charms. The stuff this man has learned would take the casual visitor more than a life time to obtain. Here is his knowledge for you to savour at the cost of a paperback. This is not just a book for aspiring house buyers, it is an invaluable asset to anyone travelling in Italy. IF ONLY, we had had this book all those years ago, but we have it now and it brings even greater pleasure to our life Bella Italia

Handy reference work

My Art History department adopted this book as its official style-manual a few years ago, and we assign it as a textbook for our writing and methodology class. To my great dismay, however, our bookstore has had some trouble ordering it this year, and so I have encouraged my students to "cut the Gordion knot" by ordering it from Amazon. The chapters on choosing a topic and organizing an argument are, I think, useful and well-written, but the greatest value of this book is Chapters 9 and 10, which provide clear instructions for writing footnotes and bibliography. This may be a mechanical task, but it is a frustrating one for many students, because there are so many possible formats to use (MLA, Turabian, etc.) Barnet's system has the virtue of being designed specifically for research papers about art and art history, and the format he recommends is clear and logical. The book also reprints the instructions for contributors from the Art Bulletin, the most prestigious art-historical journal in this country, and so will be of value for graduate students and recent PhD's preparing their first works for publication.

I was quite surprised, but I really like this book. I was having a lot of trouble writing an art history paper and this book really helped clarify my thoughts. The book asks pointed questions that helps you focus your thoughts. I would strongly recommend this book to someone writing an art history paper.

Useful in some ways, not in others.

I recently read the 6th edition of this book in hopes that it would help me to improve my ability to understand and write about art. I found that the book is a direct, well-written primer for someone finishing high school or beginning their undergraduate degree, but for someone with a bit more experience, it turns out to be a mixed bag.
I know next to nothing about visual art. I'm the quintessential "knows what I likes, and likes what I knows" type of guy. On the other hand, I'm a graduate student in English, so I'm well-practiced in writing essays and in applying various theoretical and critical methods. I read this book in the hopes that it would help me to better understand art. That is, I wanted to learn, as Sylvia Barnet puts it, "How does art mean?" The beginning of the text does introduce some basic questions and ways to think about different kinds of art, ranging from painting, to sculpture, to architecture, to photography, to video art, etc. However, this is not meant to be an instructional book to teach someone about art. It is more like an assistant text for a freshman-level art history course. A great deal of the book is spent discussing how to organize essays, sentence structure, revising, formatting, and some instruction on critical methods. But, again, this book is not a book on writing. It's not about art, it's not about writing, so what is it? Well, like it says, it's about writing about art. A good deal of this book was useless to me, but some of it was enlightening. If you've already got some experience studying the visual arts, or some experience writing, or you just want a really indepth study on either, pick out something else. If, however, you just want an easily understood, basic primer on writing and art, this isn't a bad choice at all.
