Grade 10 Up-Russel Middlebrook is a sophomore at Goodkind High School. He has a secret crush on a baseball jock, Kevin Land, and soon discovers that Kevin is also gay. The boys become friendly outside of school and set up the "Geography Club" with three other gay students, one of whom is Russel's closest friend, Min. The club members relish the opportunity to discuss their lives and to relate to one another openly and honestly. Eventually, however, intense peer pressure and insecurity take their toll. Russel's relationship with Kevin ends, but the "Geography Club" becomes the "Goodkind High School Gay-Straight-Bisexual Alliance," and the protagonist gains new insight into himself and his place in the world. Hartinger has written a compelling look at the high school scene and the serious consequences of being "different." The plot never falters. Dialogue flows smoothly and is always completely believable, and the occasional use of profanity adds to the realism of the story. Characterization is excellent, with all of the teens emerging as likable but flawed individuals caught in a situation that few young adults could handle with maturity. This author has something to say here, and his message is potent and effective in its delivery. Many teens, both gay and straight, should find this novel intriguing.

A Fantastic First Step

Brent Hartinger's "Geography Club" is told by protagonist, Russell Middlebrook, a closeted gay teenager who is determined to keep his sexuality a secret from everyone. Like with any high school, status is important, and coming out of the closet was a surefire way to be at the bottom of the barrel. The jocks in the locker room are like a completely different species to him, and even his two best friends, Min and Gunmar, are kept in the dark about his attraction to boys.

It's a chance meeting that emerges from an anonymous online conversation that Russell discovers that Kevin Land, jock extraordinaire and Mr. Popular, is gay. It is this encounter that changes Russell's life, and what leads to the establishment of the geography club, which is really the ultra-secret club for Goodkind High School gay students. The five members include Russell and Kevin, Min and her secret girlfriend Therese, and Alex.

This story explores the importance of community, finding strength in your peers when you feel isolated from the rest of the world. It's definitely an experience many gay teens struggle with, debating the aftermath of coming out while trying to find someone else like them. And the members of the geography club coming from different "lands" (social groups and their respective levels of popularity) illustrates this struggle very well.

What I think is really capturing about this book is Russell's narrative voice. It provides the story with a very familiar style, and you're able to really get into the protagonist's mind. And it's more than just Russell navigating who he is as a young gay man, but as a teenager with friends. His moments with Gunmar are particularly illuminating, painting his friend as more than just the weird guy who can't get a girlfriend. Similarly for Min, you really get an idea of who she is through her interactions with Russell. So although Russell is the main character and the story is told from his perspective, the story isn't just about him.

It's about friendship, and bullying, and self-identity beyond sexuality.

If I had to make one complaint, it was that I wanted to see more of Kevin. I feel like Min and Gunmar really grow into characters in their own right, and wanted to see a little more dimension from Kevin. Although, that being said, I love the way we see Kevin through Russell's eyes, and how his feelings shape his behavior, because Russell's reactions ring very true for a high school student experiencing his first romance.

I would definitely recommend this book, and look forward to watching these characters grow as I read the other books in this series.

This book is inspirational to people that are not only uncomfortable with their sexuality, but for those other kids that have a hard time fitting in with the high school atmosphere. Geography Club is funny, memorable, and hits you to the core. Applies to kids around the age of 16, but the messages from the book could apply to young or mature kids. This book will throw you with an unexpected twists, and events that remind anyone of the normal high school period.

You follow Russell, a sophomore in a small town, who has trouble finding his true self. Hormonal and lonely, Russell goes to a online gay chat room where he finds out that he isn't the only one in a school of 800 people that's gay. Kevin, Russell's main love interest in the story, I just a Jock on the baseball team that's popular and won't let anything change his status, even if it's Russell. Later, Russell soon finds out that Min, Russell's best friend is bisexual, and dating a Girl Jock soccer player. The four of them, along with the Lefty Rebellion Ike, meet up and find that they have more in common then they originally thought, come up with a secret place for the 5 of them to meet, calling it Geography Club, a place where no high schooler in their right mind would join.

Along with their secret meetings and baseball practice, Gunnar, Russell's other best friend is having trouble finding himself a girlfriend, and makes Russell promise that he would do anything for him to get one, yet still doesn't know Russell's gay. Gunnar makes Russell go on a double date with two girls that Russell could careless, and Russell soon realises that Kimberly, Gunnar's date is only there so Trish, Russell's date, could be there with him. Gunner then forces Russell through a gilt trip to go on another one where Trish forces herself on him. He tells her he's a virgin and that he wants his first time to be special. Later that night Russell kisses Kevin, who shares his feelings for him.

After, the plot starts to kick in when Russell is on the top of the 'Land of Popularity'. Kimberly and Trish spread rumours that he is the Gay Boy everyone had been excusing Brian Bunt, the outcast and prime suspect of bullying at Goodkind, after he denies having sex with Trish at her family's beach house. Russell gets to know how it feels being at the bottom of the social ladder, losing his friends, breaking up with Kevin, and all the while Geography Club is falling apart.

This book is great, the only thing I have to say about it is the price. But once you start Geography Club you won't be able to stop until the end.

AN OUTSTANDING PIECE OF LITERATURE

Now, I'm not saying it took me to all of the places I expected, but it did encourage me. I wish it had been much longer in order to take me to places that weren't covered. It was a little too light-hearted. There is some intensely serious stuff going on here, and I wonder if more avenues could have been explored. I fully understand the author's intent, that is, to target a teen audience, but there seems to be so many missed opportunities to expand the range of the story. As it stands, it is an extremely well written YA novel. But it could have been so much more. The "at a distance" aspect of the story left me wishing for real depth, but then it wouldn't have been suitable for the YA audience. It failed to push the limits of the genre, which wasn't absolutely necessary, but it definitely would have placed it in a whole better class of relevance to today's teen angst regarding outcasts. S. E. Hinton started this sub-genre of literature, but Brett Hartinger failed to continue it. I understand that a motion picture has been released, based on this novel. I hope the screenwriter manages to make the necessary changes in tone in order to make it have more impact.

I want to read it again

I first read this book when I was a young Australian engineer in Singapore in the 60's. It (and an earlier even better book "The Chinese Looking Glass") had an enormous impact on my understanding and appreciation of the Chinese people. I am at this site looking for a copy as I made the mistake of lending mine.

About the Author
Carlos Gonzalez, a father of three, studied medicine at the Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona and trained as a paediatrician at the Hospital de Sant Joan de Deu. A must read with a faux pas...

Another excellent book of Mr. Gonzalez and a must read for parents and people that influence the raising of children in any way!
I was only disappointed with two passages: the first is on page 209 (kindle version) referring to a boy who used to bite other children to which it is implied that the reason for such behavior was "problems at home". I believe that biting can also occur -for various reasons- in toddlers raised with love and attachment and I would like to see a remark of that sort in later editions.
The second passage (page 209) reads "Indeed toddlers ....hit [fellow children] because they have been brought up by parents who hit them." Again, although this may be true in many cases, it is not true for all toddlers who hit other children and again this can happen in loving families who practice attachment parenting and not hitting. Both biting and hiting are "common" behaviors among many toddlers who have to learn how to express their feelings (of anger, jealousy, etc.) in more appropriate ways. Generalizing like that is just adding insult to injury for caring families who have to deal with their toddlers temperament along with the critisim of their supposedly bad parenting.

Loving and Sensible Parenting Book

Kiss Me! Is an absolutely beautiful and important book. I am a mother of three and a volunteer counselor to new parents and have had years of experience with the "advice" that leaps at parents from every bookstore and library shelf as well as bombarding them online.

I often thought much of the advice & theory was confusing, conflicting and unworkable at best, and was irrational and actively harmful at worst.

After reading Kiss Me, I now understand WHY.

Kiss Me is the possibly the only general parenting book I will recommend from now on.

This book changed my life. Finally somebody who is in tune with my internal voice. I am tired of doctors trying to force me to leave my child to cry even if they are throwing up from it. This book gave me peace of mind and now we are all happy at home, My 2 year old is the happiest baby ever and he is a great son too, he didn't turn into a spoiled monster.

Always Use Caution

As the author implies, "Always Use Caution" AND always check with your doctor if you have any health concerns.

This book is written in a layout of historical background and folklore. There are many uses for hydrogen peroxide shared here and most are recommended with low grade level H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide). The many uses (not all included in this book) depend on the strength and what you mix it with (i.e. dye in glow sticks, to make peroxide blonde hair, grout cleaner, AND yes as a tooth cleaning agent, etc.) but caution is advised!

That being said, my take is if it can be used as a main ingredient in explosive devices (higher strength), I'm not sure I want it (even lower strength) IN my body, but perhaps as a cleaning agent in the house.

Note, 35% hydrogen peroxide is used to prevent infection transmission in hospital environment, and hydrogen peroxide vapor is registered with the US EPA as a sporicidal sterilant.

Quick research indicates the following grades apply (not necessarily recommended by author Thacker, just FYI):

Grades of Hydrogen Peroxide
3% Hydrogen Peroxide (Drug Store / Grocery Store Variety)
Made from Diluted 50% Super D Peroxide.
Contains stabilizers: phenol, acetanilide, sodium stanate, tetrasodium phosphate, etc.

6% Hydrogen Peroxide (Used by Beauticians in Hair Coloring)
Comes in strengths labeled 10, 20 and 40 volume. Activator added to use as a bleach. Unknown Stabilizers.

30% Re-Agent Hydrogen Peroxide
Used in medical research. Contains stabilizers.

30-32% Electronic Grade Hydrogen Peroxide
Used for washing transistors and integrated chip parts before assembly. Unknown Stabilizers.

35% (also 10%) Technical Grade Hydrogen Peroxide
Contains a small amount of phosphorus to neutralize any chlorine in the water it is combined with.

35% Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide / 50% Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide
Used in food products like cheese, eggs, whey products.
Also used to spray inside of foil lined containers for food storage (antiseptic packaging system).

You can find food grade hydrogen peroxide in 3%, 6%, 7%, 12%, 17%, 35%, 40% or 50% solutions.

Consumption of any concentration of hydrogen peroxide above 10% can cause neurological damage.

Was Disappointed!

I was very disappointed with this book. It tells you a few household uses for peroxide that can be purchased by everyone, but the health benefits that is raved about in the advertisement is only for prescription peroxide and of course that means visits to physicians and costly testing. Wished I had saved my money--do yourself a favor and save YOURS!

Damaging Misinformation!

Warning to anyone who might follow instructions to use hydrogen peroxide orally. Oral use, even in a diluted strength, can cause mucosal membrane abnormalities in the lining of the mouth. My father had been encouraged by a dentist to rinse with hydrogen peroxide which he did for many years. Unfortunately because of that he had to live out his last days in absolute misery, unable to eat or even drink water. The entire mucus lining of his mouth had been destroyed by this practice, making it painful even to swallow. Don't take my word for this; research it on the internet before taking this irresponsible advice.

NLP for English teachers, but ok for anyone

This book give a very good introduction to NLP techniques, the aim of which is to use in the English (as a foreign language)classroom but I find the simple techniques useful for myself. Not like other "self-help" books, as it lacks the hype. Anyone who works with students, or perhaps therapy of any kind will find it helpful and inspiring.

I think that the two review here, as of January 2011, are what I would expect to see here. I understand both sides but lean towards the higher end.

I think that after having taken a couple of formal professional development courses in NLP for TESOL that I can appreciate what the goals are and why. I used these ideas in Japan a lot, the ideas the 1 star reviewer refers to and my students loved it. They were truly riveted in authentic communication as the activities do ask a lot of deep personal questions - ones that would be addressed in self-help books. Such tasks stimulate personal involvement. Seriously meaningful discourse was the result and a lot of inner-class rapport building. I have also used some of the ideas in the Middle East at a Men's Technical College, and they enjoyed discussing the meanings behind the listening as a puzzle - and got better at it, deciphering the metaphors within.

So, for me - an easy 5. If you have not played with NLP as an ELT I would also suggest having a look, and if the book is coming with a CD or Cassettes the heavy price tag is more justifiable than if not.

Love it. The best thing is the level of rapport that can be developed.

out of my hands - into the hands of the used bookstore

Are you a Leo Buscaglia fan? Are you stimulated by books such as Life Strategies, Don't Sweat the Small Stuff, or Take Time for Your Life? Do you think Oprah is an intellectual giant? If so, this is just your cup of tea.
For the rest of us, this book is not worth the time. It claims to explain how NLP techniques can be used in the ESL (ELT) classroom. What is NLP? Sorry to be so blunt, but to me, NLP is nothing but overblown self-help. I looked over two other books on NLP, and found nothing but generalities and a lot of nonsense. And they actually hold conferences on this stuff!
This book is filled with quotes and anecdotes I've already heard hundreds of times before. With the exception of a couple of exercises, everything in this book is obvious and too vague to be of any help. I've read many other books on ESL and this is by far the worst.
Want to read something really inspiring on ESL (ELT)? Try Learning Teaching by Jim Scrivener. Try A Course in Language Teaching by Penny Ur. These two books are much better than In Your Hands.
