Not a textbook

This book is being used as a textbook in my "Intro to Databases" course. This book should not be considered a textbook, it is merely a story of a student who had taken the intro to databases course and is now trying to remember how to create a database for her school tutoring system... this book is very frustrating if your intention is to learn more about databases.

This book is terrible for learning SQL. It is very vague and has little to no instructions for actually learning how to use SQL. If you want to learn to create a basic database it is ok at best. Do not buy this book and expect to learn and understand SQL.

Pretty poor book for a college course

I am currently working towards getting a second degree, which I believe gives me the ability to spot a decent text book, and this book is pretty poor in my opinion. There isn't nearly as much information as there is some bad story about a girl trying to make a database. Honestly I wish there was more information and less trying to write a story because the book would be cut in half, and only focus on the data that I care about. It is a pain to navigate through the poorly written story of Sharon who is trying to make a tutoring database. Besides this, the questions and vocabulary sections are annoying to attempt to work through. All the vocab is in the margins of the chapters which makes it easy to just find a short description, but they don't bother bolding the keywords in the text so you can get a better definition of the concepts. Often the questions or "Practices" are lacking in actual instruction and are more annoying that useful.

Please, if you are a professor teaching a database course, do not make your students read this.

This Is Getting Serious

I've been a huge fan of Chew since I ran across it in the public library soon after the first volume's release. An intelligent, action-packed, wickedly funny epic, Chew is the story of Tony Chu, a cop who can basically see the past of anything he eats - and I do mean anything. By this sixth volume, Space Cakes, the cast of Chew has grown and evolved to the point that its main character, Tony, is actually comatose for most of the story while everyone else carries on, and that makes it no less enjoyable whatsoever. In fact, Layman and Guillory have inserted a spark of life into each and every character, no matter how ridiculous, and made them leap off the page to the point that the reader is cheering for every flawed hero and booing every nefarious villain. For example, Poyo, the blood-lustful cybernetic rooster, has a few solo adventures of his own in this work, even taking on the ultimate evil, and if that sounds crazy to you, it is. But, that craziness is what makes Chew so much fun to read. You never know what's going to happen, and you know that there is no limit to what can occur.

The other part of the book features Toni Chew, Tony's sister. Toni is a NASA agent and has slowly been introduced during the duration of the series, and now that she takes center stage, we learn that she has a taste-related power of her own. Much like Morpheus's sister Death, Toni steals the show and her perky personality quickly wins over our hearts.

While Chew has always had its violent moments, they were always done with a touch of humor and silliness. Don't get me wrong, I'm not belittling it - this is an expertly written series. In fact, I'm consistently amazed by how Layman connects and interweaves seemingly unrelated plots. But, in this volume, things get very serious, and for the first time, I realized just how much these characters have come to mean to me. I won't spoil anything for you, but the book ends on a note that completely caught me off guard and left me reeling.

Absolutely imaginative with tight, intricate plots, Chew is a must read. And while I hope it doesn't become too serious, the last moment of tragedy is well-placed by Layman and a huge plot point to progress the series. Is this book hilarious, insane, and always surprising? Yes. And it's also one of the best books going. Chew is required reading, and Space Cakes only reinforces this fact.

Still Going Strong

If you are looking into volume 6 you probably already know that Chew is a fun ride with action and humor. Vol 6 keeps it all coming. No drop in quality. The story continues to develop and get more insight on some points. Tony is layed up in a hospital so we get to see more from other characters.

Chew is amazing. Pick this book up.

"Space Cakes" is a recipe for joy and sadness

"Space Cakes" continues the excellence established right out the gate by the first CHEW collection. This comic is one of my favorite current books from Image Comics, along with MANHATTAN PROJECTS, GOD HATES ASTRONAUTS, SOUTHERN BASTARDS, and TREES. It's one of the few books that has the ability to make me break down crying over the characters and situations, either in laughter or sorrow. This volume was one of the best (or worst, depending on your viewpoint) for that since the comic started.

Kudos to Layman and Guillory. If I could write a book a tenth as good as this, I'd be eternally grateful.

ROY R. CRAIG JR., PHD, is Professor Emeritus of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at The University of Texas at Austin. He has received numerous teaching awards and has worked in industry at Boeing, NASA, and Exxon Production Research Corporation, among others.

ANDREW J. KURDILA, PHD, is the W. Martin Johnson Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. His current research focuses on structural dynamics, dynamic systems theory, control theory, and computational mechanics.

Not my favorite

I am having a hard time getting into this book.

I really like Chopra and I like how Clough and Penzien added random processes towards the end of the book. It provided me some room to grow.

Great Buy

This book is easy to read and provides a lot of useful examples. The concepts that are harder to grasp have in depth examples that clarify the process. The problems provided at the end of each chapter are a good mixture of applicable and conceptual. This is a great book for understanding vibrations as a whole.

In terms of the condition of the book, it was exactly as described. I couldn't be happier.

the print quality is poor

The content of the book is excellent, but the print quality is poor. I'm disappointed with the quality of the printing of the book, some pages uncut and I are some pictures and graphics are blurry. The book looks like a photocopy.
