Brilliant study

The author proposes to study the Vietnamese expatriates living in Paris, France and arriving in that country between 1954 and 2000. The majority came to France after 1975. Although they formed a minority group, they did not actively get involved into French politics.
They had their own politics, which they brought with them from Vietnam. Two groups dominated the landscape: the communist pro-Hanoi group and the anticommunist group. The particularities of these two groups were analyzed and studied lengthily as the author, a Frenchwoman, has been able to "infiltrate" into these groups.

This is an important study that reveals how fractionated the Vietnamese living in Paris are and how politics in the native country still profoundly affects these people. One could say that the Vietnam war goes on in Paris.

A beautiful story with a philosophical character

Garance is on her way to a wedding. She's in the car with her brother Simon and his in her eyes boring and too fussy wife. Garance and her sister Lola keep teasing her. In the car Garance thinks about her life and everything that's right or wrong about it. When they find out their brother Vincent won't come to the wedding the three siblings decide that they can still be wild and carefree. They leave Simon's wife at the wedding and together they're driving away to find Vincent.

Vincent lives at a chateau where he's trying to make money by telling stories to gullible tourists. As nobody wants to go to the wedding they decide to stay with Vincent instead. Because there's another wedding in the village that evening they didn't dress up for nothing and they go to the simple village party. For a short while they can relive their younger days and they have a lot of fun together. At the end of the weekend, when it's time to go back, they each had their chance to think about life and how they want to live it.

Breaking Away is an interesting story about being young and not being young any more. Garance is at that age where she starts to realize what it means to leave ones youth behind. She isn't ready though as she's still living a wild and carefree life. But is that a way of living, does that lead to happiness eventually? I think Anna Gavalda has written a story about a topic that troubles a lot of people who see people around them settling down, but aren't really ready for that yet. Garance and her siblings have a fun and eye opening experience, but it's also the end of an era. I read about it with a smile and with a lump in my throat. The feeling was described so well, with plenty of contrasts to emphasize it. I enjoyed reading this book very much and think Breaking Away is a beautiful story with a philosophical character.

This is a "must-have" book in every technical library!

This is an excellent overview of Telecom, Datacom, and Networking. Eric Coll is an articulate, thoughtful technical writer with an obvious mastery of this challenging field, and he brings all his skill to bear in this book. For such a broad technical coverage, the book avoids skipping over critical points, and provides an in-depth look as appropriate to allow you to put everything into proper perspective, and to relate how each technology works with the others. There are a number of excellent analogies, some neat history, and overall, a simply excellent structure. Easy to read, memorable, and chock-full of information.

I hesitate to call books brilliant, but this is about as close to that as it comes. Very, very highly recommended!

strangely compelling

this is the best war novel i've ever read. the writing is brisk, the story moves quickly, the portraits of the soldiers are powerfully lucid. this novel manages to pull off an incredible feat---it makes brutal soldiers who are war criminals seem almost sympathetic (almost). the novel makes these soldiers appear almost as if they are pawns of forces much larger than themselves. the ending chapter is the best ending chapter of any book that i've read.

An Excellent Novel of the Japanese Experience in World War II

I purchased this novel to gain some idea of what World War II was like through the eyes of the Axis. While German and Italian writers have been available for decades, in both fiction and memoirs, there has been a surprising paucity of work from the Japanese perspective, with a few exceptions like Letters From Iwo Jima. This book is not common propaganda, however. The author, Tatsuzo Ishikawa, was a journalist embedded with an army unit that participated in the Massacre of Nanking. This experience is transplanted into the novel with a group of soldiers that have just prior to the novel's opening seen combat, and will again as they enter Nanking. Although these soldiers are not good men, nor even necessarily likable ones, it shows the haunting effect certain acts of brutality can have on even the hardest of men. To compare to the novels of an earlier war, this is a novel that carries the sentiments of Erich Maria Remarque with the imagery and random violence of Ernst Junger. On the whole, I highly recommend this novel. It is a relatively quick read and creates understanding (if not pity) for a side whose experiences are rarely noted.

From the film studio Kosmograph, Pirandello's Gubbio steadily winds the crank of his camera by day and scribbles with his pen by night, revealing the world both mundane and melodramatic that unfolds in front of his camera. Through Gubbio's narrative—saturated with fantasy and folly—Pirandello grapples with the philosophical implications of modernity. Like much of Pirandello's work, Shoot! parodies human weaknesses, drawing attention to the themes of isolation and madness as emerging tendencies in the modern world.

Sicilian writer Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936) is the author of several novels, short stories, and plays, including Six Characters in Search of an Author. Adams Sitney is professor of the Council of the Humanities and Visual Arts at Princeton University and the author of Visionary Film: An American Avant-Garde in the 20th Century.

Colin Renfrew is Disney Professor Emeritus of Archaeology and former Director of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of Cambridge. He is the author and editor of many books, including Before Civilization, Archaeology and Language, and Prehistory and coeditor (with Paul Bahn) of The Cambridge World Prehistory. He is a fellow of the British Academy and a life peer in the House of Lords.

Paul Bahn is co-author of Thames & Hudson's hugely influential and bestselling textbook Archaeology: Theories, Methods and Practice, and has also published a variety of popular books, including Easter Island: Earth Island (with John Flenley), Mammoths: Giants of the Ice Age (with Adrian Lister), and Images of the Ice Age, widely regarded as the standard introduction to cave art.

Why Have I Not Read This Sooner?

I have spent literally thousands of dollars over the years on whitening products, having my dentist whiten my teeth and going to a professional non-dentist tooth whitening center only to have the same dull results.If I had only read this book sooner, I could have saved a lot of money, time and hassle. This book not only tells you how to whiten your teeth at home naturally, but how to keep them white longer and avoid products that cause staining on your teeth. Alright, I'm not going to avoid coffee, but this book will show me how to still have whiter teeth. Don't get this book confused with all of the so-called home remedies on video sharing sites, this book is the real deal. It is very well written and the instructions are so easy to follow, you even get pictures! The advice in this book is priceless, how can you put a price on a whiter, brighter smile?

I am always looking for natural ingredients to use instead of chemicals and this book lists several that I had not thought about or even considered they could possibly be used to whiten teeth. I am glad I found this book and highly recommend it.

About the Author
Geoffrey Wawro is Professor of Strategic Studies at the US Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. His previously published books include The Austro-Prussian War (Cambridge, 1996) and Warfare and Society in Europe, 1792-1914 (2000). He is the recipient of numerous awards and prizes, including the Austrian Cultural Institute Prize and the Society for Military History Moncado Prize for Excellence in the Writing of Military History. In 2002, he shared a New Orleans Press Club Award for the live NBC/History Channel coverage of the parade and opening of the D-Day Museum Pacific Wing. He is also the host and anchor of the History Channel's Hardcover History, a weekly interview show with leading historians, statesmen, and journalists.

Very good piece of history

This is a well-written work that places the Franco-Prussian War in historical context. It attempts to tie the war to the subsequent horrors of World War I and II. As you might expect, there is a great deal of information about the great battles of the war. It was a bit too detailed for me in this regard, but for those of you who love military history, this is probably a bonus. The French don't come off as particularly brilliant or brave and are contrasted with the vastly more efficient Prussians. Overall, this is a very informative historical work.

Predictable, but sweet...

This book doesn’t have much of a plot. Basically, boy loves boy, boy gets boy, boy loses boy, boy pulls his head out his ass, boys live happily ever after. Fortunately, the writing is so good, and the scenes so sensuous, I found myself not caring a lick.

If you are looking for a deep, angsty romance, don’t look here. If you want a quick, hot read definitely check out Best Friends.

Malcolm and Carrick have been best friends since they were kids who work together at the precinct. One night, after an unsuccessful night of looking for “true love in a crummy hotel bar” get down and dirty with each other. The following morning Carrick has a minor freak out about it while Malcolm really wants to try being with each other. Carrick isn’t worried about himself so much as he’s concerned with what others will say and think.
I felt so awful for Malcolm. Maybe he has been playing straight for years but he’s always been touchy with Carrick and has always told him “I love you”, although it wasn’t taken in a romantic way. Now, when he feels he really can be open and say it, Carrick wants to hide. “God, you must have thought I was a f*** sap this whole time.” Nothing hurts worse than being someone’s dirty little secret when you profess your love. Even as Carrick admits to himself what a coward he is, he doesn’t do anything to make it better.
When the two are able to awkwardly bridge the chasm that has opened up between them, they try to go back to their straight guy friendship and actions but now Carrick can’t deal with that either. It’s a difficult thing for both of them.
It’s a very quick and easy read, despite the inner turmoil of Carrick. I enjoyed the guys together and the ending is sweet.

I really liked this book. The story line is real. The characters have great chemistry that blooms into good sexual scenes. The characters are well developed.

Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing primary industries in the world. Tropical Mariculture, the cultivation of organisms in warm marine waters, is developing areas as greater demands are placed on the production of aquatic food from traditional resources. This volume edited by De Silva is the first to address the development of mariculture in the tropics, and brings together chapters written by world experts in the field. Overview chapters discuss the conceptual framework while individual chapters address issues associated with the development of a new primary industry, and give detailed examples of cultivated species in the tropics.

About the Author
Sena S. De Silva is a chairmember in the Aquaculture Department at Deakin University, Australia. He has over 25 years of experience in aquaculture and fisheries management. De Silva has had numerous articles published relating to aquaculture, in addition to co-authoring a text and editing many others. He is a founding member of the Asian Fisheries Society, serving on its council for nine years and is currently Editor-in-Chief of its journal.

De Silva has done an excellent job of reviewing the current state of tropical marine aquaculture. I continue to use this work as a basic reference.
