About the Author

Antony R. Rees, Formely Chief Scientific Officer (CSO), Biotage AB, Uppsala, Sweden and Professor Emeritus and Honorary DSc, University of Bath, UK

Anthony Rees is currently Chief Scientific Officer for the biotechnology company Biotage, Sweden. He was lecturer in Molecular Biophysics and Student of Christ Church from 1980 to 1990 at the University of Oxford. From 1990-1997 he was Professor and Head of the School of Biology and Biochemistry, University of Bath where he is an Emeritus Professor and holds an Honorary Doctor of Science. In 1989 he was a scientific cofounder with Graham Richards of Oxford Molecular, which became one of the earliest UK biotechnology companies to be listed on the London Stock Exchange. He has been visiting Professor at the Universities of Montpellier and Lund, scientific director of the French company Synt:em, CEO of the Swedish company MIP Technologies and Chairman of the Board of the antibody technology company, F-star. He is a member of the American Association for the History of Science and has published more than 120 scientific papers, a number of books and is an inventor on more than 30 patents.

Good Practice Book, particularly on I, IV, V Blues Progression

Good guitar book. Examples are in the advanced beginner/intermediate level. Presented are various licks over a full I, IV, V progression. Various styles of artists and numerous keys and modes are used. For example, as an "encyclopedia", you could investigate licks over the IV chord in a particular key you're working on, and compare the styles of various artists on how they would likely handle it. The underlying approach is to provide useful lick examples in Minor, Major, Mixolydian, etc. modes in various keys and various styles, all the while referencing the I, IV, V progressions. There's a lot here to learn from, and altogether, very good.
The CDR is good reinforcement, and the playing is sharp and professional, but doesn't overwhelm the student.

Good book but when it arrived there was no cd included. Other than that may not be the best lick book out there but it gets the job done.

So lame... so non-blues.... so very weak...

I'll be honest from the start: I'm not fond of learning "licks" in and of themselves. It's sort of like reading only certain lines of great poems, but skipping the rest of the poem. Taken out of context these short licks mean very little, even when they are given a context (such as "Chicago Blues, lick played over V of I-IV-V progression in key of A") The problem is that these phrases, taken out of context of the entire solo or the full song, lack any context. It's like reading only certain lines from "Hamlet" and trying to understand it - it's not going to happen and it's a terrible way to learn to play. So from the start this book and others like it are doomed to fail, in my opinion. Having said that I do have some blues "licks" books that I don't mind so much. This is NOT one of them. It's hard to know where to start with criticizing this book - there's so much crap to complain about. Let's start with the licks themselves: they claim to be in the "style" of a particular blues genre and within that in the style of a blues guitarist who plays in that style. So for example we have a "Chicago Blues" section which has some licks by Buddy Guy, to name one. This is a great idea, if it worked in the least bit. But these "licks" are tame, lame and dead on arrival. They're terrible examples of blues licks. They have no character, no identity, no zest, no zeal, no nothing at all... they're just really weak examples of generic blues licks. And this brings us to the recorded examples on the accompanying CD. These are truly awful. I mean they are so far removed from the blues that it makes me think Wayne Riker has absolutely no clue as to how to play the blues. The sample licks are flaccid and dull; lifeless and stillborn. They are perfect examples of how NOT to play the blues. They are void of any emotional or expressive content at all. They're just... horrible. Uninspired and lifeless. A true waste of time. They give you zero idea as to how the *real* blues men would have played these licks. They are weakly recorded, tepidly played and totally lifeless. Awful. YOU WILL NOT LEARN HOW TO PLAY THE BLUES FROM THIS BOOK. It's pretty much that simple. Don't waste your time with this crap. It's awful. A tepid, stillborn collection of flaccid, tame "licks" that don't inspire you to pursue real blues. They're everything the blues were NOT meant to be. Do not buy this book. It's truly awful.

Arden Shakespeare Hamlet

I am currently working on my MFA/Directing. I directed Hamlet and am now writing my defense of it. I have two thoughts on this third edition.

After going through this edition, from a point of view of the script, I'm not sure I understand the need to update Harold Jenkins's 2d edition. The script itself was easier to navigate in the 2d edition and I thought Jenkins's notes were more helpful. I also disagree with some of what Thompson and Taylor have to say in their editorial notes below the script. That said, I am biased because I used the 2d edition as a sort of "Hamlet Bible" as I directed the piece. Jenkins's notes were extremely insightful and useful. I became very comfortable with it.

On the other hand, this third edition has some different insight into the play in performance than does the second edition, as well as information on casting and music that was not included in Jenkins. Obviously there is much written about William Shakespeare in the world, and this 3rd edition of Arden is probably the most up-to-date resource for bibliographic material (as well as some photos of past productions of the play). Jenkins edition is 24 years old, ancient in the scholastic world's "what's new" when it comes to sifting the vast quantity of material written on Shakespeare and Hamlet.

Obviously, the needs of the theatrical world for playing Hamlet are different than that of the scholastic world (of which I am currently stuck in both). I think Jenkins is more user-friendly for the theatrician while Thompson & Taylor suit the needs of the scholastic better. My final thought is that a scholar/student of Shakespeare will want to have both the second and third editions for the differences they have to offer.

Middle aged and finally able to read Shakespeare

I cannot more highly recommend this particular book, No Fear Shakespeare's Hamlet.

I am approaching 50 years old and my only real experience trying to read Shakespeare was in high school where we were assigned roles in class and made to read, without comprehension, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Cesar. In the interim, I tried watching a few plays and dragged my kids to see the play Taming of the Shrew, which they hated because they couldn't understand the language nor the plot. Rather than becoming a Shakespeare hater, I've always felt inadequate and dumb for this huge hole in my education.

My current inspiration to try Shakespeare again was my desire to try and help my high school aged son become more educated and cultured than I have been.

I tried first with the Folger annotated editions of Shakespeare. They look excellent and define the unfamiliar words, but I still could not make sense of a substantial portion of the dialogue. I guess maybe I'm just dumb, I don't know.

Anyway, I saw good reviews about this No Fear series, and I ordered several. So far I have read the modern English translations of Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, and The Tempest. While I feel a bit like I'm 'cheating', I actually have really enjoyed all the plays and at least now I know the plots and the characters and even some of the more subtle themes. I can't answer the complaints that the translations don't adequately translate Shakespeare's meanings. There are a few side notes that point out double meanings and things like that, though there are not extensive footnotes or sidenotes.

To answer those who rate these books one or two stars, my answer is that they are at least a door into the world of Shakespeare for those of us unable to navigate the originals on our own. And they only take a couple of hours to read. It's not like this is a lifetime commitment or anything. The book only costs five bucks, so why not invest a couple of hours and read it? And, for me, I liked the plays so much that I AM now going to dig out the Folger editions and read the originals, with the No Fear books available in case I get in trouble. These modalities of trying to appreciate Shakespeare are not mutually exclusive.

Well, hopefully that's helpful to someone. I wanted to write this so that people would know that these books are not just for lazy students hoping to avoid reading the originals or somehow 'cheat' in their English classes. I'm not a Shakespeare scholar or teacher and never will be, just an ordinary guy, but for me, these books were the window of opportunity that I had been searching for. Two thumbs up, most definitely.

Best Shakespeare Edition Available: Arden

The Arden editions of Shakespeare are the best available. While they cost a lot more than the standard cheap editions, they have so much more. The Folger editions (probably the most widely available editions of Shakespeare) have footnotes that are quite general and never do they have enough. In addition, they really don't have that much extra information on the play--only a small essay analyzing the modern issues of the play. The Arden editions are truly the scholarly editions of Shakespeare. Ninety percent of the time that I have a question on the text, a footnote provides more information. In addition, a lengthy introduction is included. Everything is documented. While at this point I don't care that much about how the quarto version of Hamlet said "no", when the folio version said "so", it's nice to know that if I have a specific question, the answers in there. My thoughts on Hamlet: Don't fret about understanding the material, just dive in. Shakespeare offers interesting plots to the beginners and vivid prose to pick over to the advanced scholar.

NEVER MIND HIS PARLOUR....

...take a step into Spider's mind -- and after you do that, you'd better pray that the door didn't slam shut behind you. You're definitely going to want a way out -- this is a pret-ty scary place.
Of the three novels and one book of short stories I've read by Patrick McGrath, this, I believe, is his masterpiece. As Spider narrates his story -- in an almost-torrential syntax that in itself reveals a lot about him -- the reader is inexorably drawn further and further into the mind of a man who is slipping away before our eyes. Spider is hanging on to the ledge of reality by his fingernails, while events conspire to take their turn trodding on his fingers. His thoughts and fears are as real to us as if they were our own. His world -- more-or-less present-day London -- seems as alien to us as a Martian landscape. Everyday people, events, objects and places leap out of the mist at him with frightening intensity -- we feel our breath and our pulse quicken repeatedly as he/we attempt to deal with the ever-more threatening reality of daily life in a halfway house, as images and ghosts from the past intermingle with pieces of the present, and it gets harder and harder to tell one from the other.
McGrath is, at the core, a master story-teller. His interest in the psychological most likely stems from his father's work at Broadmoor Hospital in England, where he grew up. All of his works share an eye for detail, and the care he takes in doing his homework is very apparent. This book is one of the most compelling, captivating and frightening portraits of madness I have ever read -- and it's thoroughly entertaining as well. It's staggering how much power McGrath has been able to cram into this slim volume -- without crowding out a fine story, told with a uniquely fractured clarity and in an unforgettable tone.
The reader is also encouraged to check out a couple of his other fine novels: ASYLUM and THE GROTESQUE. The former is one of the most unusual love stories I've ever run across, and the latter will surprise and reward you with its combination of suspense and wickedly funny humor.
I'll take Patrick McGrath, a true modern master of the Gothic style, over any of the mass-producing 'scary novel' writing machines (who are so in vogue) any day. The quality of his work will surely stand the test of time. I would suggest not reading any of these with the light off, but that would be difficult, would it not...

Trapped in a Spider web

This is my third Patrick McGrath's novel and my favourite so far. I've read `Asylum' and `Dr. Haggard's Disease' . The first is a haunting and dark love story --quite different, and very touching--, the second is interesting, however I don't know what happened, but I couldn't click with the book. But `Spider' became my favourite, and it is unforgettable to me.
It is a story of man, named Dennis `Spider' Cleg, a man who lives in a kind of halfway house for the mentally ill in London. As he is both protagonist and narrator, we are never sure of what he is talking about. Maybe things happened the way he says, maybe he is alucinating. Who knows? He is a man with mental problems that is followed by the image of his father killing his mother and bringing a whore to substitute for her. And we learn all that happened from Spider's sick mind. Until the surprising end.
I highly recommend this novel to readers who like dark thrillers, with psycological undertones. The characters are very well developed. Spider is a human being as any other, we can easily understand what happened to this man that led him to be the way he is.

A definite must have for schools and families.

As I have said previously, I am a sales rep for a major book publisher so I see a lot of books. I am certainly not afraid to tell you when my company sends out what I call a stinker. On the otherhand if we publish one I really like, I do not have a problem telling a school or library that they have to have a book.

This is a book that they should all have. It will appeal to students on a social level. It is wonderful teaching tool for teachers and parents alike. It does a wonderful job of being consistent on the rhyming text. Plus, it is just a real great story with really great pictures.

I ultimately judge a children's book by how often my child pulls the book out of the bookcase for me to read, and I can truly say that this is a book my two year old grabs almost every night.

Revolutionary monkeys, UNITE!

Echoing both Sombertown (from the stop motion classic Santa Claus Is Comin to Town) as well as Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927), Drabsville is a gray town filled with sad inhabitants.

Into this cold, unhappy world walks a suspiciously happy, guitar-playing, vest-wearing hippie named Chutney. Actually, much of the story follows the plot from First Blood. Like Rambo, Chutney finds an enemy of authority (the mayor, to Rambo's Sheriff Teasle) and is unfairly thrown into prison. The *seed* that Chutney illegally brings into Drabsville could easily be seen as allegorical marijuana. "Destroy that nasty weed!"

Upon his release, and with the mayor temporarily out of town, Chutney incites the masses. Surely another influence at this point was Reagan's "Tear down this wall!" speech. We see formerly morose chimps painting their homes pink(!) and turning the palace into a fruity playground. Nor is it a stretch to see the kiddie rocket ship as a decommissioned weapon of mass destruction.

Chutney soon has the entire town's population dancing in the streets. Everyone is eating copious quantities of food, no one is working anymore. Drabsville (now renamed Happytown, in the classic revolutionary tradition) has gone from dystopia to utopia.

Having successfully turned the guards against their master, Chutney has *him* thrown into jail. With the mayor under lock and key, Chutney completes the coup d'état by assuming the mayoral post. He lets the former mayor out of jail but only to rub his nose in the new world order. Power to the people! Or at least to the chimpanzees.

This children's book packs some heavy messages into its colorful pages. For children conditioned to equating chimps with Curious George, they may not pick up on every facet of the story without parental assistance. How much you clue them in is up to you.

Tricky Territory

It is a tricky thing to try to teach kids that authority is not always right and sometimes you have to stand up to it. This book strikes a perfect balance, with the main character being punished for doing something beautiful and for the common good but technically against the rules. When he ultimately wins out (with the help of some young chimps), rather than punishing the person who jailed him, he teaches him the error of his ways. A very thoughtful book, but one that won't be over the heads of the intended audience.

he "knows his stuff." Too much build up/behind the scenes for my personal taste. I thought the
book would get to the genetics a bit sooner. Still a good read. History buffs will enjoy it.

About the Author
Joi Barrios holds a Ph.D. in Filipino Literature from the University of the Philippines. She serves as a Lecturer teaching Filipino and Philippine Literature at the University of California, Berkeley while on leave as an Associate Professor from the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD). Barrios has won fourteen national literary awards and, for her contributions to literature, was among the 100 women chosen as Weavers of History for the Philippine Centennial Celebration. In 2004, she also received the TOWNS (Ten Outstanding Women in the Nation's Service) Award.

Great textbook for anyone trying to learn Tagalog

For anyone wanting to learn Tagalog, the texbook choices are spare. Therefore, to get one's hands on any Tagalog language textbook becomes an accomplishment by itself. Luckily, any person with even just a slight inclination to learn Tagalog will strike gold twice with this book. The language that the writer uses in explaining the various components of the language is very accessible. The dialogues that begin every chapter are very practical and relatable and allow for a much easier absorption of the lessons. The "Mga Tala sa Kultura" that give important cultural notes are very detailed and include mini vignettes that put these cultural notes in the context of the language. The writer's own personal experience with the language really shines here. It's knowing the little quirks and idioms of a culture that separate the proficient speaker from the fluent one. These neat and helpful notes fast track a learner to the latter category. My favorite part of the book is the "Pagbabasa" section at the end of every chapter. This section is made up of one or more paragraphs (more with each passing chapter) in which a learner can apply what they've learned from the chapter and read little stories in Tagalog. I've studied many languages and have done so through a nice variety of methods. My personal opinion is that to really retain a language, one of the very best things that a language textbook can do for learners of a language is to provide readings in that particular lingua. You're not just, for instance, practicing speaking by writing dialogues. You're practicing reading by reading! For me, this a feature of the book that really helps to elevate it and take it beyond the offerings of others. This textbook is great for those wanting to learn how to converse in and read Tagalog. The author truly makes an effort to ease the learning process by making the lessons accessible. This is definitely a mainstay in my collection of language textbooks.

Textbook in Use

The pedagogical feature of this book works for heritage language learners at university. There is enough number of examples and exercises for students to work on. With the morphosyntactic nature of Tagalog and other Philippine languages, some aspects of grammar are really challenging and therefore require explanation from the language teacher.
